The entire communities of Ajah Makarious and Badore of Eti-Osa East Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State were in celebratory mood yesterday when 500KVA Relief Distribution Substations were commissioned in the two communities. The brand new electricity infrastructure, which is meant to address the poor power distribution in both localities, was provided by the Lekki Concession Company (LCC).
The 500KVA Relief Distribution Substations which include transformers and electrical equipment such as 800TP&N feeder pillars and power lines for distribution of electricity to end users, were donated by LCC to the Eti-Osa communities as part of the company’s Community Support and Development programme.
“This is a very commendable gesture by LCC,” said Mrs. Funmi Fiddi, Secretary to Eti-Osa East LCDA. “Despite their huge investment on expanding and rehabilitating the Lekki-Epe Expressway and the fact that they have not even started recouping their investment, LCC has also deemed it fit to invest in the wellbeing of the people of these communities by providing this infrastructure. It is in fact something to commend, and on behalf of the LCDA Chairman, we say a hearty thank you for this gift.”
Also speaking at the event, the Baale of Badore, Muriana Saliu Jikoji thanked LCC for their contribution to the community. He said that the substation would indeed be a source of great relief to the community for whom power had been a major challenge. He added that by this gesture, LCC has indeed shown their commitment not only to the road project but the people in the community, by identifying a need and meeting that need.
Mr. Charles Imevbore, Head Corporate Affairs and Communications, LCC, commended the communities along the Lekki-Epe axis for the hospitality and enthusiasm they have shown regarding the toll road. “Though our primary assignment is the provision of world-class road infrastructure and related services along the Lekki-Epe axis, our interest in the Eti-Osa communities in which we work is centred on our support programmes and projects that will promote sustained economic empowerment for enterprising men and women, new business development, better healthcare, and social and environmental enhancement.
We at LCC cannot but appreciate in whatever way we can the warm and cordial relationship we have enjoyed from the good people of Eti-Osa. You have warmly hosted us since this project began and have in fact presented yourselves as partners in progress during the course of this project. We hope that these Substations will alleviate in no small measure the power challenges that your communities have been experiencing, and by extension, improve the standard of living of the people in the long-run,” he added.
Also in attendance at the launch was the Senior Manager Distribution, Lekki Business Unit, PHCN. He said: “This contribution by LCC is very laudable and on our part we would do all in our power to ensure that this infrastructure is properly utilised and well managed. We seize this opportunity to implore the good people of this community to help safeguard this infrastructure. This is because a major challenge faced by PHCN is vandalism of infrastructure, but we trust that this will not be the case in this community.”
These donations are the third and fourth electricity Transformer and Substation installations in the area under LCC’s Community Support and Development Initiative, pursuant to which LCC partners with the LCDA and PHCN to identify the communities in Eti-Osa that do not have adequate power facilities to deliver electricity to residents. Other communities that have benefited from this scheme are Sangotedo and Ijesha, both in Eti-Osa East LCDA.
The landmark Lekki-Epe Expressway project is a flagship Public Private Partnership initiative which is being driven by the Lekki Concession Company under a 30-year, build, operate and transfer (BOT) Concession model. The approximately, 50-Kilometer road will be fully expanded and revamped and thereafter managed throughout this 30 year period. Another 20 Kilometers of the Coastal Road is also expected to be constructed as Phase 2 of the project. The initiative is privately financed from offshore and local financial institutions, and has attracted considerable international interest in the light of its importance and innovation. The entire infrastructure will be transferred back to Lagos State at the expiration of the 30- year concession period.
