Lekki Concession Company is committed to operating and managing its business in an ethical manner and to contributing to economic development while improving the quality of life of its various stakeholders – ranging from its internal human capital to the local communities in which it operates and society at large – to produce an overall positive impact on society.
Through research with the Lagos State Government Local Council Development Area authorities and various community associations on issues of rural local development for economic empowerment, healthcare, environment and education for grassroots communities of Eti Osa living along the Lekki-Epe Expressway, Lekki Concession Company (LCC) has started work in alliance with state and local government/non-government agencies and other stakeholders in its support programmes in order to realize the objectives of the undertaken and future initiatives. LCC has identified opportunities to advance its relationship with the host communities and responded by increasing its community investment activities and extended its support to developing communities where it operates.
LCC has sought and now has both the expertise and the capability to help achieve positive change, particularly in communities and project operations delivery chain. For instance, its roll-out plan for delivery and installation of electricity transformers in seven communities in Eti Osa East Local Council Area flagged off at the end of September 2009 with the installation of two units for communities in Ajah Ilaje and Sangotedo, and is expected to continue into 2010. Also, the beautification of Ikota Primary School in partnership with Eti Osa West (HQ) Local Council Area, a part of our Safety First campaign designed to educate children about road safety and the Highway Code, is also expected to start in Quarter 4 of 2009. It will include branding of the school grounds with road signage and the construction of a seven-a-side football pitch. Other community support initiatives the company plans to execute are youth and skills development programmes, water supply and treatment projects, drainage repairs and waste collection wheelie bins, and finally, fishing nets to support the efforts by existing local self-employed fishermen. LCC’s community investment activities are also in kind, such as employee volunteering or management time, particularly in areas of its Safety First campaign and other advocacy initiatives like Youth Development and Interactive Workshops.
LCC’s community investment activity is designed to add local perspective and relevance to the way its contributions are made to benefit the local communities along the Lekki-Epe Expressway of which it is a part, and will take account of different cultural approaches to corporate giving and reflect the endeavours and interests of its workforce. By actively seeking engagement with stakeholders who have complementary objectives to its own, LCC will seek to achieve more than it could by acting alone.
As LCC continues to build effective partnerships with NGOs, private organisations and government agencies engaged in innovative schemes to address safety, education, water and sanitation, healthcare and hygiene, the schemes it has chosen to invest in will be discharged with good governance and clear deliverables, monitored to see that it achieves a win-win solution
